I welcome the greater profile afforded to issues of most concern to our Aboriginal communities - and especially the targets focused on early years and development that will contribute significantly to Aboriginal wellbeing in years to come.

Office for Youth Regional Consultation

The Government of South Australia’s Office for Youth is partnering with the Community Engagement Board to consult with young people across the state on SASP targets to:

·         ensure young people’s voices are heard as part of the community engagement consultations around SASP, particularly disadvantaged groups
·         inform the development of a new South Australian Youth Action Plan 2008 – 2014 that is clearly linked to SASP targets and informed by youth voice.

On the 31 October and 1 November 2007, the Office for Youth conducted stage one of the pilot youth consultation in Mount Gambier around South Australia’s Strategic Plan targets.  The youth consultations will enable government agencies to know what matters to young people and inform the development of the South Australian Youth Action Plan 2008 - 2014.

Over 60 young people were consulted across the south east community, capturing a range of demographics that included:
·         young people aged 12 -  25
·         Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) members
·         indigenous young people (10)
·         disengaged young people (10)
·         young people from remote communities, such as Bordertown (10).

The consultations covered a variety of topics including employment, public transport, and personal safety, health, voting and volunteering.

Four young people from the south east have volunteered to help facilitate the broader community consultation being organised by the Community Engagement Board on the 19 and 20 November 2007 in Mount Gambier and Naracoorte.

An OfY training officer worked with the group on Tuesday 30 October 2007 to train the young people in facilitation skills and the office will maintain an ongoing relationship with them to ensure they are adequately supported to perform the facilitation role.

The focus group consultations will be followed up with a survey that is being sent to all schools and interested parties within the south east region.

The information gathered from the youth consultations will be collated, analysed and disseminated back to the respective government agencies.
